Historical Sukhothai
Sukhothai was founded in 1238 by two rebellious Thai princes who liberated themselves from Khmer domination by establishing the first in dependent kingdom in Thailand. Although the city was but one of hundreds of small city-states in the region, it enjoyed a privileged location midway between the ancient empires of the Khmers to the east and Bagan to the west. Preaching a philosophy of political cooperation rather than military might, early kings of Sukhothai ("Dawn of Happiness") successfully united many of the small principalities between Laos and Malaysia to form the most brilliant empire in Thai history, and the only nation in South east Asia never to fall under foreign domination.
 Under the enlightened leadership of King Ramkamheng (1278-1318), Sukhothai enjoyed a golden age of political, cultural, and religious freedoms. Ramkamheng was a clever warrior and brilliant scholar who devised the modern Thai alphabet from Mon and South indian scripts, introduced a free-trade economic system, promoted Theravada Buddhism as taught by Sri Lankan monks from Nakhon Si Thammarat, and personally dispensed justice from his Manan gasila Throne. According to Siamese traditions,citizens during his reign could ring a bell mounted outside his palace and ask for royal judgment
Art and architecture reached their apogee in the mid-14th century under the reign of King Maha Lithai (King Mahatammaraja I). By the end of the 14th century,Sukhothai had become one of the largest Buddhist centers in the world the city of six kings until losing a power struggle in 1378 with the rising kingdom of Ayuthaya. the last vestige of autonomy was lost in 1438 when the final king abdicated and Sukhothai came under the rule of an Ayuthayan prince
The city lay abandoned until 1782 when a new line of king, the Chakri dynasty, came to power in Bangkok. Anxious to legitimize their rule by honoring the past, Rama I gathered together hundreds of Sukhothai statues with which to fill the newly built monasteries in Bangkok;Sukhothai's largest bronze Buddha was installed inside Wat Suthat in Bangkok. interest in Sukhothai was further revived by Rama IV who,after a visit in 1833, returned with two stone tablets establishing the mythology of Sukhothai.
In 1977 the Thai government, with assistance from UNESCO, began a restoration project that culminated in the completion of the Sukhothai National Historical Park in 1993.
